As you can imagine living the life of a trans person is rife with difficulty. The author, Precious Brady Davis, tells her story from a troubled childhood, born as a male, and through her quest to become a woman.Born Nathaniel, he and his two siblings were taken from his mother at an early age They lived in several homes until their grandfather adopted them and gave them the semblance of a normal life. Uprooted several times, living with different relatives,Nathaniel knew he was destined to become a woman. Understanding his complete family took awhile. A background of religion that became born again and turned into strange ways. Nathaniel graduated high school and went onto a Community College and the University. Defining himself as gay and as a woman, he went on to performing gay drag and was very successful. While in college Nathaniel was good, performing every night on stage with his colleagues.When the real world entered his life, Nathaniel became Precious Jewel. She had a social life, met a man who identified as trans male, fell in love, and they married. She has entered the corporate world and works as a diversity specialist. She and Myles have a daughter, and continues with her drag career at times. Precious looks back at her life, how she overcame some of the difficulties, and her performing life.Precious has given us a look at her life, and how she dealt with prejudice as a black gay man and as a black gay woman. The greater part of the book is powerful. The early life in a highly disfunctional is heartbreaking. The account of manipulation, delusion, and cruelty of the Pentacostal movement is fascinating. The narrative of coming out is insightful. But then, as she finds herself, she loses herself. Sure, she talks the talk of social justice, but just can’t tell us enough about the glitz and opulence of her life. Sure, someone who was denied and had to deny can be excused for going a bit overboard, but is the person at the end of this book someone to emmulate? I was disappointed (and bored) by the incessant name dropping and obsession with designer labels. She could have been an inspiration. If one's idea of a successful black trans woman is a shallow fashionistia, then this is the book to read. I found it a sad disservice to trans women who want more out of life.
